Joni Mitchell Wore This Glowy Cheek Combo for Her First-Ever Grammys Performance

In an era where terms like «icon,» «legend,» and «mother» are often overused, Joni Mitchell embodies the true essence of all three. At the 2024 Grammys, the celebrated singer-songwriter, with nine Grammys already to her name (now ten), graced the stage for her debut performance at the age of 80, delivering a poignant rendition of «Both Sides Now.»

For this momentous occasion, Mitchell adorned her signature braids and donned a black velvet pant set, accentuated with pearly nails and an array of chunky jewelry befitting a folk icon. While her performance captivated audiences, many couldn’t help but notice the radiant glow of her skin under the stage lights. Thankfully, makeup artist Molly Greenwald shared exclusive insights with Byrdie on how she achieved Mitchell’s luminous look for the evening.

Greenwald reveals to Byrdie, «For Joni’s historic Grammy performance at 80, we aimed for her iconic natural look with an elevated touch. I wanted to achieve a classic, glowing, flushed complexion.» She emphasizes Mitchell’s desire to maintain authenticity onstage.

Using Ilia products exclusively, Greenwald began by prepping Mitchell’s skin with the brand’s new Base Face Milk ($58), layering on «lightweight hydration to enhance her delicate skin.» Next, she applied the Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 ($48) in ST2.5 Sombrio all over Mitchell’s face, blending it in like a serum with her fingers. To brighten under her eyes, Greenwald utilized the True Skin Serum Concealer ($32) in SC1.5 Suma. «I prefer to keep the makeup sheer in strategic areas to allow her skin’s natural radiance to shine through,» she explains.

For the cheeks, Greenwald applied a mix of the Multi-Stick ($36) in In The City and the Liquid Light Serum Highlighter ($42) in Atomic to «add lots of glow and warmth to the complexion.» Finally, Greenwald defined Mitchell’s eyes with the Liquid Powder Chromatic Eye Tint ($28) in Hatch, a pretty moss-green shimmer, and a coat of the Limitless Lash Mascara ($28).

The very last finishing touch before Mitchell hit the stage? «A little powder in the right places and some fresh juicy multi-stick and highlight serum on the cheek.»
